It's All About Data

Everything revolves around data, and more so every day. My work too.

SOME OF WORK

Wimbledon's Champions

A higher step of all, to grow in the heels of tennis. The last Wimbledon tells that Roger Federer is the tennis player with the highest number of titles won in the oldest and most prestigious Grand Slam tournament.

I created this viz before the last final, writing an article on Info Data - Il Sole 24 Ore. You can read the article here:

North Atlantic Hurricanes and Storms (1900-2015)

In recent days it seemed that Irma could overcome Allen, the worst hurricane ever, that in 1980 blew up to 189.9 mph (about 305 km / h), causing hundreds of deaths and damage to $ 1.4 billion in time. According to the data Allen remains the strongest hurricane that has ever crossed the North Atlantic.

I collected data from NOAA, analyzing informations about all the hurricanes and tropical storms that hit the United States from 1900 to 2015. In total, the registrations were 1443. In the graphic I tried to tell in a visual way 100 years of hurricanes and storms in the North Atlantic.

Serie A Transfer Market

It's time to get back to work, after the deserved break. And with it also a new football season started two weeks ago.

Every year summer means not only holiday and sea, but also tranfer market. For this reason I collected and analysed  transfer market data with and .

First of all, with the help of Federica Ferrarini, one of the best with Alteryx, I collected data from Tranfertmarkt, and created my dataset thanks to this Alteryx workflow:

After that I started working on Tableau, building my Viz. I choose to use a kind if graph I never used before. A radar chart to show where every team spent more money to improve their group of players (in percentage). This graph is interesting to show multiple variables, but they need to be organised in a way that make sense to the reader.

Education and Foreign Languages

I created a new dataviz from Eurostat data, where you can find the average of languages studied for each European country and the percentage of English, French and German students.

Pencils represent the average number of foreign languages learned for pupils in secondary education (ISCED 2 and 3). The classrooms, on the other hand, represent the percentages of all upper secondary pupils (ISCED 3) who are learning English, French or German. Percentages refer only to general and non-vocational education in countries where English, French, or German are described as foreign languages in the curriculum or other official document.

Wages and Retributions

According to data published by Istat on April 27, regarding collective bargaining and contractual wages, the contractual hourly wage index shows an increase of 0.1% in March compared to the previous month. A percentage that grows up to 0.4% compared to March 2016. Overall, after the first three months of the new year, the average hourly wage is 0.4% higher than the corresponding quarter last year.

I Analysed these data from Istat with a new viz, published on Info Data - Il Sole24Ore. You can read the entire article at this link:

French Elections 2017: Second Round Results by Department

New chapter for my data visualization story of the last French Election. After the second round Emmanuel Macron conquered the Palais de l'Élysée with 66.1%, 3 percentage points more than the optimistic predictions.

Marine Le Pen was stopped at 33.9%. As shown by the graphics, Macron conquered most of the French departments. Only Pas de Calais and Aisne are colored in blue, both conquered by Marine Le Pen with percentages between 52 and 53%.

The predictions for this election were the least predictive of French history. For a reason other than that recorded in Trump and Brexit cases. Emmanuel Macron's victory was largely underestimated. In actual results, the gap has expanded around 32 percentage points. An error in the forecast of about 10 points.

French Elections 2017: Second Round Polls

After the first round polls and the first round results my data visualization story of the French Elections obviously grew with the second round polls.

French Elections 2017: First Round Results

The second dashboard of my French Election's data visualization story handled the analysis of the first round results.

Following the layout and design of the last dashboard (you can find it here), I created five little maps, which reflected the results of every candidate. The bigger one was instead coloured following the first-placed candidate by department. This second French Election's Viz was also elected as Viz of The Day on Tableau Public.

French Elections 2017: First Round Polls

Every time there's an election, data people are excited to work on it!

I made a lot of work for the last French Elections, trying to figure it out what was going on, analysing polls and results to create a data visualization story of this important democratic event.

The first dashboard of this story was about the first round polls. The graphics focused on the top five candidates, those who had the potential to reach significant percentages. According to data collected by OpinionWay, independent candidate Emmanuel Macron was in charge of polls, with a 23%, ahead Marine Le Pen of a single percentage point.

The dashboard, with my article, was published on Info Data - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link: http://www.infodata.ilsole24ore.com/2017/04/22/elezioni-francesi-cosa-dicono-sondaggi/

Travels and holidays

It's time for vacations and travels!

I analysed the report on travels and holidays in Italy and abroad, published by Istat on March 31.

During 2016, for the first time after seven years, the number of trips and overnight stays made by residents in Italy increased. 66 million and 55 thousand of travels, with a positive change compared to the previous year ( + 13.7% ).

Italians travels has been decreasing since 2007. A trend that has affected not only leisure trips, but also trips for work reasons.

In the Viz the most visited locations are organized on the "Tourist Line" (green) and "Workers Line" (red), in descending order. The trips to the Italian regions are compared inside the left box, that to European countries inside the right box. The percentages are calculated on the total travel for each respective sector. The percentages relative to the Italian regions compared to 100% of trips to Italy, those of the European countries compared to the total travel to European countries and so on about the rest of the world.

UK workers at risk of being replaced by robots

According to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), an international network operating in 158 countries, about 30% of UK jobs will be potentially threatened in the coming years by innovations in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Lower than that of the United States and Germany, respectively 38% and 35%, but higher than that of Japan, to 21%.

Andy Kriebel and Eva Murray gave us an interesting dataset during the MakeOverMonday's week 14, about the situation of millions of UK workers at risk of being replaced by robots in the next years.

I used a simple trick to create this Viz, but I don't want to talk of this now. Since September I will update this blog with some Tableau tutorials, tips and tricks.

Also this Viz was published with my article on Info Data Blog - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link:

Trump Bans and terrorism

In this simple dataviz I wanted to answer a question: Do Trump's bans serve to fight terrorism? and after this first question, How many terrorist attacks in the US have been carried out by immigrants from 7 banned muslim countries?

So I created 3 maps: one for the electronic ban, the second about the immigration ban. The last one refers to the nationality of the terrorists who perpetrate an attack in US.

You can read my article (in Italian) or look at the Viz to answer these questions. The article was published on Info Data Blog - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link: http://www.infodata.ilsole24ore.com/2017/04/09/scopri-la-correlazione-bandi-trump-gli-attacchi-terroristici/

The Secret Of Success

MakeOverMonday Week 13, a weekly social data project promoted by Andy Kriebel and Eva Murray.
Representatives of different social strata were asked the same question: "What are the main reason of success?" Poor need to change their life approach primarily, as it is evident from their responses.

All started from this infographic.

The challenge was to transform it in a Tableau Viz, interesting and interactive. Also this time I tried a creative approach, without being afraid to broke the best practices. I created a simple viz, A chart with side-by-side shapes, trying to simulate a climb.

How to reach the top? Play with my Viz to discover what different social strata think about the answer at this question.

Tourism in Italy

Here I am, after a long time, to update this blog with new vizzes!

What are the most visited regions and provinces in Italy?
Starting from the data released by the Bank of Italy, which has been conducting an annual survey of tourism since 1996, I tried to find value in the data with an interactive graphic.

This time I used a Snowflake Chart, a useful graph when you want to visualize herarchies. I went through this kind of visualization thanks to Ken Flerlage and his blog, where I explained how to build it.

This Viz was published on InfoData Blog - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link:

8Xmille and 2Xmille - Is there a correlation?

8xmille is the IRPEF income tax portion, which the Italian State distributes among itself on the basis of choices made in tax returns and the religious confessions that have entered into an agreement. The Catholic Church clearly won in terms of contributions received, also favored by the "indifference mechanism", according to which contributions from non-preferential taxpayers are also granted to Catholic Church.

2xmille, introduced in the year 2014, provide for the allocation of part of Irpef share to a party, with a voluntary financing system. According to a SWG survey published on the end of April, the most voted party in the Catholic area would be the Democratic Party for detachment.

I went to seek regional correlations between 8 and 2 xmille, to understand what relationship exists between the primacy of the Catholic Church and that of the party led by Matteo Renzi. Are polls on the Catholic electorate reflecting the distribution of contributions? Are the regions that allocate 8xmille to the Catholic Church also have high rates of 2xmille of the Democratic Party?

Travelers 2016

The Bank of Italy carries out a sample survey on tourism every year, since 1996, based on interviews and counts of travelers residents and non-residents in transit to the Italian border.

A total of 64583 thousand Italians traveled during 2016. It is a number greater than the one recorded during 2015, when only 62870 thousand travelers left Italy for a foreign country. At he same time a total of 82873 thousands tourists traveled to Italy during 2016. It is a number greater than the one recorded during 2015, when only 81635 thousand travelers came to Italy from their countries.

I created two different dataviz, published with a piece about tourism in 2016 on InfoData Blog - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link:

Young People Living Arrangements

The Affordable Housing Database (AHD) has been developed to help countries monitor access to good-quality affordable housing and strengthen the knowledge base for policy evaluation. It brings together cross-national information from OECD countries and EU member states.

The database currently includes indicators grouped along three main dimensions: housing market context, housing conditions, and public policies towards affordable housing. Each indicator presents data on a particular issue, relevant definitions and methodology, as well as key results. Indicators also discuss comparability, data and source issues, and, where relevant, include the raw data or descriptive information across countries.

I looked at the young people living arrangements. In Italy more than 80% of the young people between 15 and 29 still live with their parents. This is what emerges from the analysis of OECD data. The Italians are also in last place of young people who stay with their partner, only 11.1%.

Demographic indicators 2016

On March 6, 2017 Istat released the last demographic indicators estimated for the year 2016. The italian population on January 1, 2017 amounts to 60 million 579 thousand people.  According to these indicators the italian population would have declined by 86,000 units over the previous year.
On January 1 the Italian residents have 44.9-year average, two tenths more than in 2016.

Individuals over 65 are 13.5 million and accounted for 22.3% of the population. A number increased compared to that recorded in 2007, when over 65 were 11.7 million, accounting for 20.1% of the Italian population.

I summarized a variety of information in a single data visualization. This viz was published on Info Data Blog - Il Sole 24 Ore at this link:

Affordable Housing

Access to good-quality affordable housing is a fundamental need and key to achieving a number of social policy objectives, including reducing poverty and enhancing equality of opportunity, social inclusion and mobility. Housing needs are frequently unmet, and today a significant number of people across the OECD are homeless and too many households live in low-quality dwellings or face housing costs they can ill afford.

I crossed two dataset for this dataviz. One related to the housing tenures, the other one to the housing prices.

This is the most creative waffle chart I ever made (even because I've only made two). 20 little homes and chimney smokes, that indicates the most expensive houses of the related countries according to their price index.

Oscars 2017 Predictions

This is a predictive analysis on the Oscars 2017.

The win probability for each award is calculated using the methodology described by Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight. The win probability is based on the historical accuracy of the other awards predicting the Oscar winner over the last 25 years. It also uses whether or not the award voting memberships overlap with the Academy. Finally, it uses the number of nominations for each award type.

Each award is based on the square of its historical accuracy, and then double the score for overlapping membership. The nominations points are multiplied by 0.2 and added to the overall score. This final score is then normalized to convert the value to a percentage.

Oscar 2017 according to Rotten Tomatoes

Before the night of the Academy Awards I tried to understand which were the most probable winner. I created two visualization. One that tried a predictive analysys, the other looking at the average rating of the movies candidates on Rotten Tomatoes.

Taking into consideration the average rating of the Rotten Tomatoes, for all the five directors of the Best Picture nominees in 2017 represent the highest point in career. The movies have the highest average rating of the professional experience of Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan, Mel Gibson and Denis Villeneuve.

But we come to the best film category. The most popular film is Moonlight, with an average score of 9.0 / 10. Behind it there is Manchester by the Sea with 8.9. La La Land is only in third place, with 8.6 points out of 10.

Italian left-wing parties history

A split in the italian Democratic Party now seems imminent.  Along with Enrico Rossi and Pierluigi Bersani also Vasco Errani, another symbol of the center, it should be part of the new political entity. Another split in the long history of the Italian left-wing, characterized by the turn of new parties, electoral coalitions, spin-offs and mergers.

The Democratic Party is the political reality that has reached the highest number of parliamentarians in the two chambers. The party was born from as a vocation majority party, even if it means departing from the classic positions of the left. The Democratic Party has collected a maximum of 303 deputies in the House and 113 senators.

In my last viz I tried to summarize the long history of the italian left-wing parties. This dataviz was published with my article on InfoData - Il Sole 24 Ore at this link:

The Increasing Gap

The gap between richer and poorer countries is widening steadily. This emerged from the World Bank data. Even if the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita is on average also grew up in low-income countries, the difference in height compared to the world's major economies continues to increase.

In the 1990 the difference between the average GDP per capita in low-income countries than in higher income was $ 18,373. 2015 does however record a gap increased considerably, amounting to US $ 39,099.

As shown in the graphic, since 1960 the advanced economies have considerably increased the distance with the countries of the Third World. In the visualization were choosen three representative nations for each income group, to which has been added Italy, ranked among the states with high income.
