As Data Visualization Specialist, Filippo helps organizations make data driven decisions. Oscars 2017 Predictions

This is a predictive analysis on the Oscars 2017.

The win probability for each award is calculated using the methodology described by Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight. The win probability is based on the historical accuracy of the other awards predicting the Oscar winner over the last 25 years. It also uses whether or not the award voting memberships overlap with the Academy. Finally, it uses the number of nominations for each award type.

Each award is based on the square of its historical accuracy, and then double the score for overlapping membership. The nominations points are multiplied by 0.2 and added to the overall score. This final score is then normalized to convert the value to a percentage.

Oscar 2017 according to Rotten Tomatoes

Before the night of the Academy Awards I tried to understand which were the most probable winner. I created two visualization. One that tried a predictive analysys, the other looking at the average rating of the movies candidates on Rotten Tomatoes.

Taking into consideration the average rating of the Rotten Tomatoes, for all the five directors of the Best Picture nominees in 2017 represent the highest point in career. The movies have the highest average rating of the professional experience of Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan, Mel Gibson and Denis Villeneuve.

But we come to the best film category. The most popular film is Moonlight, with an average score of 9.0 / 10. Behind it there is Manchester by the Sea with 8.9. La La Land is only in third place, with 8.6 points out of 10.

50 years of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

For InfoData - Il Sole 24 Ore I customized one viz I created weeks ago, about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. The movie was released for the first time in Italy on December 23, 1966. It was is 50th birthday and I thought to publish a tribute to the movie, in memory of Sergio Leone. 

 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was marketed as the third and final installment in the Dollars Trilogy, following A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. The film was a financial success, grossing over $25 million at the box office.

Numbers in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Cinema is one of my great passions. For this reason I decided that the topic of my last dataviz would be one of the movies I loved the most. I choose The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, a 1966 Italian Spaghetti Western film directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the title roles respectively. Ennio Morricone composed the film's score, including its main theme, and the themes of the three characters, you can listen choosing one of them in the dataviz. 

 The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is now seen as a highly influential example of the Western film genre and one of the greatest films of all time.

Hayao Miyazaki has also worked on series of very famous anime, as Lupin, Heidi, Anne of Green Gables and Future Boy Conan. Something more than just cartoons for kids and teens. Cinecomic: Marvel vs DC Comics at the box office

One of my greatest passions are cinema and movies. I'm also a contributor and journalist for Cinefilos.it, a website that deals with this topics. One of my post on my blog was about the fight at the box office between Marvel and Dc Comics, in a world increasingly characterized by cinecomic.

One of my infographic concerned how much the superheroes earned at cinema. This visualization is dated November 11, 2014.

Robin Williams' career in an infographic

Robin Williams died on August 11, 2014. He was a great actor, comedian, screenwriter, capable of reaching the highest award, the Oscar, in 1998, with his performance in the film Good Will Hunting. An Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, but alsothree nominations for Best Actor, as well as three Golden Globe Awards and numerous other awards.

I  retraced his career with an infographic.
