The win probability for each award is calculated using the methodology described by Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight. The win probability is based on the historical accuracy of the other awards predicting the Oscar winner over the last 25 years. It also uses whether or not the award voting memberships overlap with the Academy. Finally, it uses the number of nominations for each award type.
Each award is based on the square of its historical accuracy, and then double the score for overlapping membership. The nominations points are multiplied by 0.2 and added to the overall score. This final score is then normalized to convert the value to a percentage.

Before the night of the Academy Awards I tried to understand which were the most probable winner. I created two visualization. One that tried a predictive analysys, the other looking at the average rating of the movies candidates on Rotten Tomatoes.
Taking into consideration the average rating of the Rotten Tomatoes, for all the five directors of the Best Picture nominees in 2017 represent the highest point in career. The movies have the highest average rating of the professional experience of Damien Chazelle, Barry Jenkins, Kenneth Lonergan, Mel Gibson and Denis Villeneuve.
But we come to the best film category. The most popular film is Moonlight, with an average score of 9.0 / 10. Behind it there is Manchester by the Sea with 8.9. La La Land is only in third place, with 8.6 points out of 10.

A split in the italian Democratic Party now seems imminent. Along with Enrico Rossi and Pierluigi Bersani also Vasco Errani, another symbol of the center, it should be part of the new political entity. Another split in the long history of the Italian left-wing, characterized by the turn of new parties, electoral coalitions, spin-offs and mergers.
The Democratic Party is the political reality that has reached the highest number of parliamentarians in the two chambers. The party was born from as a vocation majority party, even if it means departing from the classic positions of the left. The Democratic Party has collected a maximum of 303 deputies in the House and 113 senators.
In my last viz I tried to summarize the long history of the italian left-wing parties. This dataviz was published with my article on InfoData - Il Sole 24 Ore at this link:

The gap between richer and poorer countries is widening steadily. This emerged from the World Bank data. Even if the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita is on average also grew up in low-income countries, the difference in height compared to the world's major economies continues to increase.
In the 1990 the difference between the average GDP per capita in low-income countries than in higher income was $ 18,373. 2015 does however record a gap increased considerably, amounting to US $ 39,099.
As shown in the graphic, since 1960 the advanced economies have considerably increased the distance with the countries of the Third World. In the visualization were choosen three representative nations for each income group, to which has been added Italy, ranked among the states with high income.

In the last year, due to the massive US election campaign, Donald Trump has considerably increased his presence on social networks, particularly on Twitter.
The TrumpTwitterArchive, has collected all his tweets, and today is expanding the project to other political personalities. There are several curiosities emerging from Donald Trump's tweet.
One of the main targets of his online criticism has definitely been the predecessor in the White House, Barack Obama. The graphics collects some of these, entirely focused on Barack Obama and golf. 22 tweets covering the subject since 2011, including two in 2016.
I started my viz thanks to a dataset created by Ben Jones, who created also his own beatiful visualization.

Working for Il Sole 24 Ore means also analyse things I never analysed before. This time I wrote an article about how much Europe (and Italy) grows, looking at the last data about GDP.
During the fourth quarter of 2016, which ended in December, the italian gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.2%, with a slight slowdown compared to the previous semester. Comparing the data to the fourth quarter of last year, growth was 1.1%.
In the euro area GDP grew by 0.4%, while in the EU28 does record a 0.5% from the previous quarter. Over the same quarter the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP increased by 1.7% instead of 1.8% in the euro area and the EU28.

I created two visualization for this article. One related to the growth rate of GDP and the percentage change, compared with the previous semester and the fourth quarter of the last year.
The other one, simpler, show the current prices in million of euro, looking at the trends from 2005 to 2015.

Eurostat has recently released some data on European railway lines. Last January 25 have been made public the data on mileage length of railway lines in 37 states of the continent. The day after Eurostat added the dataset that focuses on the amount of passengers carried in million-km. By crossing the two datasets, I tried to highlights some interesting numbers on the rail transport system in Europe.
Germany, with 41,161 km, has the longest rail transport network of the continent, even doubling eight of the remaining nine country taken into analysis.
The other important fact is that relating to passenger transport. The graphics intuitively summarizes the data of passengers -km published by Eurostat. Every seat occupied in the graphic represents 1,000 million passengers. France surpasses Germany, with 91,653 passenger-km than German 90 768.

My second Make Over Monday is dedicated to Valentine's Day. I started from a dataset released for this social data experiment, created with data of the National Retail Foundation. The dataset looks at how much do Americans spend at Valentine's Day.
I tried a new visual metaphor for this dataviz. Two roses, one red for the people Americans spend for, one blue for the favorite gifts. On the leaf there are written the year to which the data relate.

My last dataviz analyses how 67 countries have erected fences or walls on their borders in the last years.
Last January 25, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, has signed an executive order to start the design of the wall on the border with Mexico, already promised in the election campaign. The aim would be to stop illegal immigration. But this isn't the only wall designed or built in the last years.
According to a study published in 2016 by the experts of the University of Quebec, Elizabeth Vallet, Zoe Barry and Josselyn Guillarmou, when the Berlin Wall was torn down, a quarter of a century ago, there were 16 fences around the world. Today there are even 63, affecting 67 states, completed or in the planning stage.

Sanremo 2017 begins tonight. So I created a dataviz to analyse the past editions of this famous italian Festival. My analysis concerns especially the television audience surveys.
The Festival della canzone italiana di Sanremo is the most popular Italian song contest and awards, held annually in the city of Sanremo, in Italy, and consisting of a competition amongst previously unreleased songs. The event has a generally recognised, distinct cultural importance for the italian population and it has traditionally been broadcast on RAI with large audience figures.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents a countdown to possible global catastrophe. It has been maintained since 1947 by the members of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Science and Security Board, who are in turn advised by the Governing Board and the Board of Sponsors, including 18 Nobel laureates.
This year the clock was set to two minutes and a half to midnight. Inside the motivation, the scientists indicates the rise of nationalism, United States President Donald Trump's comments over nuclear weapons, the threat of a renewed arms race between the U.S. and Russia, and the expressed disbelief in the scientific consensus over climate change by the Trump Administration. This is the first use of a fraction in the time, and the Clock's closest approach to midnight since 1953.
The dataviz summarizes the changes registered since 1947 on the Doomsday Clock. The radar chart shows the individual movements, year by year. The size of the hands is in relation to the years when the clock marked that exact time. The Doomsday Clock, for most of the years between 1947 and 2017, was placed on 23:53, 7 minutes from midnight.
The dataviz was originally published on InfoData - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link:

For the first time I was involved in a weekly social data project called MakeOverMonday. Each week they post a link to a chart, and its data, and then you can rework the chart. The curiosity is to see if someone else can retell the story more effectively, or find a new story in the data.
What I liked the most of this week is the challenge to make something esthetically pleasing and creative from a little dataset. Proving that we don't necessarily need a lot of data to create something beatiful and carry out significant informations.
This one was the dataset:
I choose to use a waffle chart to visualize this data. I was tired of cake charts and bar charts, and I've never used this kind of graph. So I looked at this post of Andy Kriebel, and downloaded the template for the grid layout here.
At the end I modified the first dataset a bit, to add the lines in the middle of my Viz.
This is the dataset modified:
