SOME OF WORK

Trump Bans and terrorism

In this simple dataviz I wanted to answer a question: Do Trump's bans serve to fight terrorism? and after this first question, How many terrorist attacks in the US have been carried out by immigrants from 7 banned muslim countries?

So I created 3 maps: one for the electronic ban, the second about the immigration ban. The last one refers to the nationality of the terrorists who perpetrate an attack in US.

You can read my article (in Italian) or look at the Viz to answer these questions. The article was published on Info Data Blog - Il Sole 24 Ore, at this link: http://www.infodata.ilsole24ore.com/2017/04/09/scopri-la-correlazione-bandi-trump-gli-attacchi-terroristici/

2016 A Year of Terror

The 2016 was a year sadly marked by terrorism. The Brussels attacks in March, the massacre of Nice on the evening of July 14, 2016, the attack to the Christmas markets in Berlin, which has tragically ended the year. Italy had only suffer minor accidents until now, but we suddenly found the world's attention on 23 December, with the arrest of Anis Amri, author of the massacre of Berlin.

Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Somalia, Turkey. These are the countries most affected by terrorism. Based on data collected on Wikipedia, during the last year there were attacks each month and in every part of the world, mainly made by exstremist Islamic groups.

My last dataviz analyzes the impact of international terrorism during the 2016. My ispirations were A World of Terror, a project realized by Periscopic, and the work of Accurat and Giorgia Lupi, who always try to experiment with new visual metaphors, with the intention of making things not just understandable but also appealing.

The graphic analyzes some of the most active groups last year. As shown in legend, every scheme is a kind of small calendar, where were scored the major attacks of the different organizations. Each column is a month of 2016, day by day, from the top down. Intuitively, the more numerous the points are in this central part, the more the group was active during the year. Above and below the small bar graphs help to quantify victims (in red) and injured / kidnapped (in blue), month by month. Each petal on the left side represent a continent. A red petal indicates the presence of the terrorist group in the continent to which it refers, gray petals instead indicate the absence of activity in that area. More petals turn red, the higher the group's ability to move and carry out attacks on several continents.
